Pearl of Promise

DESCRIPTION

The Pearl of Promise will be presented to a junior or senior female in high school who demonstrates a strong scholastic aptitude in science and math. The recipient must posses a defined career goal, be a positive influence among peers, and have strong leadership skills. The recipient will receive a $2500 scholarship.


CRITERIA

Recipients must meet each of the following criteria:

  • Must be a senior planning to graduate from a Hamilton County public, private, or home-school in 2008.
  • Must demonstrate a strong scholastic aptitude in math and science.
  • Must excel in subjects or have interest in fields in which women have traditionally been underrepresented such as one of the following:

Concentrations:

Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Finance, General Management, Human Resources Management, Industrial Management, Marketing.

General Biology, Ecology, Molecular, Organismal, Preprofessional.

Computer Science

Concentrations:

Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Scientific Applications.

Concentrations:

Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.

Industrial Technology Management

Concentrations:

2007 RECIPIENT

Hannah Shadrick, Girls Preparatory School

Shadrick plans to use her Pearl of Promise scholarship to prepare for a career in mathematics or medicine. She excels in mathematics, science, English and foreign languages. She has served as a class officer for three years and has represented her class on the Honor Council for three years. She acts as captain of the GPS climbing and volleyball teams and leads her own musical group, “AnyGivenDay.”

This past summer Hannah attended the Emerging Public Leaders program at Furman University. As a follow-up to this experience, she is encouraging her peers and other fellow community members to become involved in a nursing home project in her hometown of Dunlap, TN.
