Chamber Businesses Cited by Small Business Groups

Angela Glover

Summer 2004

Chattanooga area small businesses swept the Small Business Administration awards this year, causing the ceremonies to be moved from Nashville—the traditional home of the honors celebration— to the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Business Development Center (BDC).

Among the winners was Angela Glover, director of the BDC, as well as two BDC tenants and one alumnus. The awards were made by the Tennessee District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration and the CSTCC office of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center.

Glover, BDC director, won the Tennessee SBA Women in Business Advocate of the Year Award. BDC tenant winners were Ed Bentley of Bentco Office Solutions, Tennessee SBA Federal Procurement Award, and James Walton, Financial Solutions Network, Tennessee SBA Minority Small Business Advocate. Kris Simmons of Fire Eye Productions, a recent BDC graduate, won the Tennessee SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Other Chamber members honored were Missy Whitaker, Print-A-Scent, Tennessee SBA Small Business Exporter of the Year; Denise Dorais, Midas Muffler, Tennessee SBA Entrepreneurship Success Award; and Sharon Cannon, Cannon Public Relations, Chattanooga SBDC Volunteer of the Year. Velma Wilson, owner of Cleaning Solutions, was the Tennessee Small Business Person of the Year Runner-Up.

The announcement of SBA’s Tennessee Small Business Week Awards was part of the annual National Small Business Week celebration.

In another honor for Glover, the BDC director was a featured speaker at the 18th International Conference on Business Incubation in Atlanta. She spoke on the topic "Innovative Budget Strategies."

The conference offered numerous educational sessions and networking venues to help business incubation and economic development professionals from around the world learn about developing sustainable incubation programs and nurturing entrepreneurial talent.

With the theme "The Power of Supporting Entrepreneurs," the conference focused on both basic business incubation strategies and new industry trends. The National Business Incubation Association conducted the event.
