The Innovators: Customers Adhering to Interlock
The Innovators: Customers Adhering to Green Adhesive Spray
By Andrew Moore
Fred Land has a product that's gaining the attention of corporate titans and environmentalists alike. Spray-Lock, an eco-friendly adhesive spray, was developed by Land’s Interlock Industries, Inc. and has been refined into its current form over the course of a decade. Spray-Lock’s unique properties are poised to change the adhesive industry.
Containing no VOC’s (that’s volatile organic compounds), it’s a product that doesn’t require consumers to choose between going “green” and saving money. “Spray-Lock uses 70-80% less adhesive to get the job done,” Land says. “Its easy-to-use spray form means Spray-Lock can also be applied much more quickly than traditional glues. Those cost-cutting characteristics are incentive enough for even those concerned only with the bottom line to start using our product.”
The potential savings Spray-Lock offers have received attention from some very big names. Wal-Mart was among the first to adopt Spray-Lock and uses the adhesive on its tiling in stores across the country. Already, Spray-Lock has saved Wal-Mart the cost and mess of using 4.3 million pounds of tile glue, according to Land. And since Spray-Lock is non-toxic and easy to use, Wal-Mart can repair and install floor tiles without having to close its store out of concern for customer safety.
Land says the company is seeking Green Seal certification, which would allow companies using Spray-Lock to receive credits towards achieving LEED certification. The adhesive itself is not only “green,” but Spray-Lock’s containers are made from recyclable aluminum.
Spray-Lock is now available for purchase by individuals as well as business es. On December 15, Lowe’s began selling Spray-Lock in its stores nationwide. Land hopes that with its environmental story and the significant advantages Spray-Lock offers in time and money, use of his product will become a new habit.
Interlock was founded by Land and his part ner Mike Whitaker 11 years ago. The headquarters are located on Shallowford Road, while the production facility is in Chatsworth, GA.
Interlock employs about 25 people. Sales momentum for Spray-Lock is building through word-of-mouth commendations.
In the future Land hopes to introduce new products using the harmless adhesive, such as no-mess, easily removable wallpaper. Says Land: “We have the best problem a business can have: struggling to keep up with demand.” |
